Browser-based tracking is getting less reliable every year. Ad blockers, shorter cookie lifetimes in Safari and Firefox, and consent banners all reduce how many conversions your ad platforms can see. Server-side tracking is one of the best ways to take back some of that control.

What server-side tracking actually is

In a normal setup, the visitor’s browser sends data straight to Google Analytics, Google Ads, Meta and other platforms. With server-side tracking, the browser sends one stream of data to your own tracking server first, usually a server-side Google Tag Manager container. That server then forwards the data to each platform.

  • The browser talks to a subdomain you own, such as track.yourdomain.com.
  • Your server decides what to send, to which platform, and in what format.
  • Cookies can be set from your own domain, which usually makes them last longer.

The real benefits

  • More complete data. Requests to your own subdomain are blocked less often than requests to third-party tracking domains.
  • Better cookie lifetime. First-party cookies set by your server are less affected by browser restrictions.
  • Control and privacy. You can remove IP addresses or other fields before data leaves your server.
  • Faster pages. Fewer third-party scripts run in the visitor’s browser.
  • A base for Conversions API. The same server can send events to the Meta Conversions API and other server APIs.

What it costs

A server-side container needs hosting. Common choices are Google Cloud Run or a managed host like Stape. For small and medium sites the monthly cost is usually modest, and it grows with traffic. You also need a correct setup: DNS for the custom subdomain, the server container, clients, tags and testing.

When it makes sense

  • You spend a meaningful amount on ads every month and small data gaps affect bidding.
  • You run an e-commerce store and need accurate purchase and revenue data.
  • You want to use the Meta Conversions API or enhanced data matching properly.
  • You need more control over what personal data is shared.

If your site gets very little traffic, or you are not running paid ads yet, a clean client-side setup is often enough for now.

Common mistakes

  • Using the default cloud URL instead of a custom subdomain, which removes most of the benefit.
  • Sending the same event from browser and server without deduplication, which doubles conversions.
  • Ignoring consent: server-side tracking still has to respect the visitor’s choices.
  • Skipping testing in the server container preview mode.
